What To Expect From Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Alleviate pain in the back of the mouth, shifting teeth by removing your wisdom teeth. Perhaps your dentist has already told you that you may need your wisdom tooth extracted, or you have a hard time brushing them. Dr. Ahmed Soboh and Dr. Saif Liswi offer extractions in Newport Beach, CA, at Soboh Liswi Dental.

Why does my wisdom tooth need to be extracted?

Some people have mouths that are too small to accommodate their wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth grow in, but gum tissue continues to cover the surface of the tooth. This improper growth is called impaction.

Impacted wisdom teeth are susceptible to holding onto tartar, bacteria, and food, which can lead to toothache and problems with neighboring teeth. Extracting the wisdom tooth circumvents this.

What can I expect during and after my wisdom tooth extraction?

Your dentist will administer a numbing agent either generally or locally. After doing this, it will take just under an hour to remove your wisdom tooth. Expect to be woozy after the procedure, and have someone help you get home safely. Take the rest of the day to rest as much as possible.

You will probably feel groggy the next day after the surgery. Inspect your mouth to make sure your healing is healthy.

Here are some other symptoms to be aware of:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding

While all of these are normal, it is good to monitor them should you have any complications with healing like infection or excessive pain.

Consuming food after the procedure

You may resume eating food immediately after your extraction, but be careful to consume soft, bland foods that are not at extreme temperatures. It might be beneficial to rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating to help keep the sutures clean while they close.
